The Curriculum

We support children in their learning and play through a balance of adult led and child initiated experiences. The Early Years Foundation Stage is a basis of our curriculum, following the child through their time at Tanglewood.

  • At Tanglewood we follow the areas of learning and development identified in Development matters in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). The 6 areas of learning are:
  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
  • Physical
  • Comunication, Language and Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Exspressive Arts and Design

We firmly believe that all children deserve the best and most exciting experiences that can be provided.  We recognise that all children are individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses, gifts and talents.  These can be recognised as staff carefully observe children learning through their play.  We recognise that when a child’s level of involvement with an activity is high, the more intense and long term the learning experience will be for that child.

From these observations our knowledgeable and experienced staff plan a wide range of enjoyable, purposeful, challenging but playful indoor and outdoor teaching and learning experiences.  The play is thus structured and yet free flowing.  Class teams systematically reflect upon and evaluate the quality and effectiveness of their teaching and plan for the next steps for learning and this information shared with parents.

We value outdoor and indoor experiences equally and plan for them                      on a regular basis.

We go out to play in all weathers!

Two lovely sayings which we totally agree with were quoted by Dr Mary Walton when     she visited Tanglewood: -

  •  "There is no inappropriate weather for children to play outside in, only                                    inappropriate clothing!"
  •   "The only bug a child can catch from playing outside in any weather is the                                        bug of enthusiasm!"

We believe that parents have a fundamental role to play in this learning process.  Parents are the child’s first educator and we join the parents in the education of the child.  We send a Home School Links activity sheet home each term as staff plan a range of ideas for you that you might like to try at home.

Our annual trip to Walton-On-The-Naze. Enjoyed by children, parent helpers and staff .

We all enjoy days in the forest garden!  Staff take their class into the forest        garden one day a week for the whole session. We experience a variety of forest                   school activities in there and go whatever the weather,                                we have enough waterproof all in ones for all the children!                                            We enjoy a whole class picnic in our camp fire circle.                 Read More
